“Re-readings: Tom Zeidman Freud Alphabet Book” revolves around an unpublished children’s Alphabet book created by the Jewish-German artist Tom Zeidman Freud (1892-1930). The raw material of the book is kept in the Shoken archive in Jerusalem, and includes metal engravings for the drawings made for each letter of the Hebrew Alphabet, as well as printed mockups of the book. In the video installation, Zeidman Freud’s engravings are seen alongside measurements monitoring their vital signs in a system Goldvicht constructed, acting as actual recordings of the light and color captured of each engraving. Goldvicht attempts to bring them back to life, while in dialogue with Zeidman Freud’s artistic and financial struggles, which led to her premature death.
