"The Writing Lesson" is a series of videos that revolve around a primal introduction to literacy. This series of works is based on the Hasidic ceremony in which a Jewish boy at age three is taken to school for the first time and is asked to lick honey off the Hebrew alphabet so that his first experience of the language will be sweet. This work is an attempt to create a distilled image of the body as it yearns for the divine in its initial form - the alphabet. The series, to which Goldvicht adds a video every year since 2005, re-examines the relationship between language and the body.
